In an interview with Axios published on 19 June 2026, President Trump revisited his long-standing account of Russia's February 2022 attempt to seize Kyiv. According to Trump, Putin had hundreds of tanks driving down the highway — "concrete, very good highway, solid as a rock" — towards the Ukrainian capital. About halfway there, a Russian general made the decision to divert the column through farmland. It had rained heavily, the ground turned to mud, and the tanks became stuck. "If this general had just driven straight down the concrete road, they would have been in Kyiv within four hours, and Ukraine would have done nothing about it. This war would have been over in a day. That was a terrible mistake."
Trump also used the interview to simultaneously assert that he is not "nice to Russia" — pointing to his decision to supply Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles in his first term. "I gave them Javelins, and those tanks were destroyed," he said. He has repeated variants of this account multiple times over the past year, including in a May 2026 statement where he said Kyiv could have been taken in "five hours" had the column not got stuck.

What the record shows
Multiple military analysts, historians and Ukrainian officials have disputed Trump's account since he began making it in mid-2025. The core problem is that Russia's advance on Kyiv in February-March 2022 did use roads and highways — not just farmland. Multiple columns advanced on the capital from different directions, including along the E40 highway from Belarus. They were stopped by a combination of factors: fierce Ukrainian military resistance including Javelin and NLAW anti-tank fire; catastrophic Russian logistical failures (the famous 64-kilometre convoy ran out of fuel); electronic warfare disruption; and Ukrainian special forces targeting Russian command vehicles. The mud was a factor — particularly in the north-west approaches — but it was neither the only factor nor the decisive one. Euronews, CNN and multiple independent fact-checkers have rated Trump's account as misleading or false.
Why Trump is saying it now
The interview comes as the Trump administration is attempting to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Diplomatic contacts in Geneva and through Gulf intermediaries have been ongoing since at least April 2026. The G7 summit in Biarritz, which concluded on 19 June, produced a communiqué endorsing a negotiated settlement framework. A call between Trump, Zelenskyy and Macron took place on the evening of 17 June — hours before Ukraine launched its largest-ever drone strike on Moscow.
Trump's repeated insistence that Russia could have ended the war quickly in 2022 serves a specific diplomatic function: it frames the war as an avoidable catastrophe caused by a Russian tactical error, not as a deliberate act of aggression. This framing allows Trump to simultaneously criticise the war's origins without directly assigning blame to Putin — whom he needs to be a willing partner in any ceasefire — and to present himself as the pragmatic dealmaker who can end what he calls "Biden's war." It also implicitly validates Trump's frequently stated view that Ukraine should have accepted Russian demands rather than fight, without requiring him to say so explicitly.
The account also allows Trump to contrast his first-term policy (Javelins) with Biden's first-term policy (restraint), and to claim credit for the Kyiv offensive's failure — a claim that is at least partially supportable, given that US-supplied Javelins did play a significant role in destroying Russian armour in the early weeks of the invasion.
