What the X-BAT is

The X-BAT is Shield AI's jet-powered autonomous combat aircraft — a Group 5 unmanned aerial system that takes off and lands vertically without a conventional runway. Unveiled in Washington in October 2025, it is designed to operate either independently or as a loyal wingman alongside manned platforms such as the F-35. It is powered by a modified GE Aerospace F110-GE-129 engine fitted with thrust-vectoring capability — the same engine family used in the F-16 Block 52 and F-16V Viper — which is used for vertical takeoff and landing as well as conventional forward flight. At roughly half the size of an F-35, with a distinctive arrowhead-shaped design and folding wings, three X-BATs fit in the deck space of a single legacy fighter, dramatically increasing the number of sorties a ship or forward base can generate.

The aircraft carries an internal weapons bay capable of accommodating 2,000-pound-class munitions as well as external hardpoints. Its sensor suite covers air-to-air, air-to-ground and air-to-surface modes across active and passive spectrums. The Hivemind AI autonomy system — already deployed on more than 30 platforms and validated in Ukraine with the smaller V-BAT — enables the X-BAT to continue executing missions in GPS-denied and communications-denied environments, to coordinate swarms of multiple aircraft simultaneously, and to act as an intelligent wingman that can absorb tasks assigned by a manned fighter pilot without requiring continuous communication.

Greece does not just need more aircraft. It needs aircraft that can deploy from islands. The X-BAT is exactly that.

Why this matters for Greece

The Hellenic Air Force already operates the Shield AI V-BAT — a smaller VTOL reconnaissance drone that the Greek Army uses across the Aegean for maritime domain awareness. Shield AI has signed a procurement agreement to expand the V-BAT fleet and has announced it will open a permanent office in Athens, with plans to invest in Greece's defence industrial ecosystem and bring Hivemind autonomy software for sovereign capability development. The relationship between Greece and Shield AI is therefore not new — but the X-BAT represents a qualitative leap: from a reconnaissance drone to a combat aircraft.

The operational logic for Greece is compelling. The Aegean presents exactly the basing environment the X-BAT is designed for: dispersed islands, remote coastlines, short sea transit distances, and an adversary — Turkey — with layered air defences and growing drone capability. An F-35 flying with two or three X-BATs as loyal wingmen can penetrate defended airspace with the manned aircraft hanging back, using the drones to probe air defences, carry additional munitions, or engage targets that the F-35 pilot designates without having to close within missile range. The X-BAT's VTOL capability means it does not need the Hellenic Air Force's existing major airbases — it can be forward-deployed on island staging areas, frigates or even coastal roads.

Timeline and status

Shield AI's current schedule calls for initial VTOL flights in the autumn of 2026 — with September as the target — followed by full-scale flight testing and operational validation in 2028. The X-BAT was presented to the Hellenic Air Force General Staff during a formal briefing, described by the Greek defence publication OnAlert as an official presentation. No procurement contract has been announced; the presentation represents Greece's formal entry into the evaluation process for a system that is still completing its own development programme. The operational timeline — mission capability by 2028 — aligns closely with the F-35 delivery schedule for Greece, which is expected to begin receiving its first aircraft in the same period.

Η Ελληνική Αεροπορία χρησιμοποιεί ήδη το Shield AI V-BAT σε όλο το Αιγαίο για θαλάσσια επίγνωση. Η Shield AI έχει υπογράψει συμφωνία για επέκταση του στόλου V-BAT και ανακοίνωσε μόνιμο γραφείο στην Αθήνα. Το X-BAT αντιπροσωπεύει ποιοτικό άλμα: από drone αναγνώρισης σε μαχητικό αεροσκάφος. Το Αιγαίο είναι ακριβώς το περιβάλλον για το οποίο σχεδιάστηκε το X-BAT: διάσπαρτα νησιά, απομακρυσμένες ακτές, απειλή εναέριων αμύνων.
