France has formalised a significant evolution in its ground-based air defence posture. Through OCCAR, acting on behalf of the French DGA, Paris has awarded Eurosam a contract for a new multi-layer variant of the SAMP/T NG — combining the long-range ASTER interceptor with the short-range MICA VL missile under a unified command architecture.
The decision reflects growing recognition that modern air threats require layered, integrated responses rather than single-tier systems.

System Architecture
The core innovation is the Engagement Module New Generation (ME NG) — a software-driven command layer managing missiles of different types from a single fire control centre. A single battery will now integrate both ASTER 30 launchers for area defence and MICA VL launchers for the short-to-medium range layer against drones and cruise missiles. The radar backbone is the Ground Fire 300, an AESA multi-function radar.
Operational Precedent: Paris 2024
MICA VL batteries were deployed operationally for the first time during the 2024 Paris Olympics, validating the system's readiness and integration with broader air surveillance networks.
Implications for European Air Defence
France's procurement arrives at a moment when European ground-based air defence is under intense scrutiny. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated demand for layered systems capable of simultaneously engaging ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drone swarms.
